Astronomers Trace Star's Infrared Glow to Black Hole Birth
A star in M31 underwent direct collapse into a black hole without a supernova, observed via three-year infrared glow from NASA's NEOWISE data. The event, detailed in Science journal, challenges prior assumptions on stellar black hole formation.
Researchers predict such collapses leave faint infrared signatures from dust-enshrouded remnants.
Giant Stygiomedusa Jellyfish Discovered in Argentine Sea
Scientists recorded Stygiomedusa gigantea, a jellyfish with a 1-meter bell and 10-meter arms, at 250 meters depth off Argentina. The expedition aboard RV Falkor revealed unexpected deep-sea biodiversity, including juvenile fish around the jellyfish.
Led by University of Buenos Aires and CONICET, it expands knowledge of southwestern Atlantic marine life.
Oak Ridge Launches Automated Root Imaging Platform APPL
DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory unveiled APPL, a robotic system for real-time imaging of plant roots and shoots. It enables time-series analysis of water uptake, nutrients, and soil interactions without disturbing plants.
APPL supports DOE's OPAL project for AI-guided self-learning labs and Genesis Mission.
